BIKE RIDE WITH TOUR OF THE OLD RAILWAY AND VISIT OF A NATURAL CAVE
Within the route of this bicycle route that we propose will be circular and highly advisable, It will be carried out from our base in Pumalverde to the Peña Montero well and return to the base through another different area.. We will only repeat the area of the old train track on its return to the base.
It is a very simple section that we will start on a very little traveled local road until we reach the area of the town of La Gándara..
The route consists of approximately 10 kms, Round trip with several stops in the surroundings for explanations of the geomorphology of the area and visit to a natural cave of incomparable beauty, and with a total duration of approximately 3-4 hours depending on the willingness of the participants, taking into account that they are conventional bicycles, although without difficulty in the route because they are areas with practically zero slopes.
Here we will find part of the remains of the old mine buildings where we can see the houses that were part of the town., We will visit the vestiges of mining exploitation: a building that was used as a machine warehouse, the ruins of what were once the workers' toilets and the area of furnaces and mineral washers. We will also see the remains of an old oven, the commissary, warehouses, workers' housing, etc.. once arrived at the beginning of the old train track that transported the mineral, and that crosses the tunnels through which the wagons circulated transporting the mineral, We will cross a bridge until we reach the first tunnel.
Until then we will be able to observe native hazelnut trees, robles, chestnuts, elderberries and some holly. When the path begins to become enclosed in the rock and we reach the first tunnel, and from here we can see the worn wooden sleepers of the train track on the ground., Once past this tunnel we see a small cavity or cave on the right., where we will make a stop.
We will leave the bikes parked for a few 15 minutes to visit part of the old mines at said entrance and take a short tour of 15 minutes exploring and observing typical cave speleothems, like stalactites, stalagmites, coraloides, columns, etc
Once we left the cave visit, We take the bikes again at the exit and continue the route we had left..
The path runs through areas of clearings and areas encased in the rock in which the vegetation acts as a bridge, providing pleasant shade.
In general the road is wide, simple and with very little slope, which also allows us to observe karst formations, spectacular landscapes and remains of the old mining exploitation.
Further on we reach a larger area and we will have access to a chasm that we can see called the “hazel trees” but it is inaccessible to us because to go down we would have to carry ropes and it would be suitable only for expert speleologists..
Finally, to some 50 metros, There is the castle of the old exploitation called Pozo Montero where we will stop to explain some aspects of this area.
Here we will make a short stop to explain the surroundings of the castle and then we will begin the return journey until we reach the Gándara area again to visit the rest of the town that we had left to visit..
Later, and then we will take a short tour along a very little-traveled regional road to arrive again after a descent to our base in Pumalverde and as the end of the journey., where we will end at the base with a small snack invited by the organizer of this event.
